On the Verge

On the Verge
By: Ariella Papa

“On the Verge” this saying can strike you in so many ways. The characters in this book are so captivating that it made me feel like I was Eve. Ariella Papa brings this book alive with her characters! If you don’t feel like an “Eve” then you feel like “Tabitha” who as she calls it is the “Amazonian sex goddesss.”

Eve is 23 and just out of college, struggling to make it in the magazine industry, but she feels like she is stuck with the horrible job as an unappreciated assistant at a bicycle magazine. I can relate with this because I have always wanted to be a magazine editor (perhaps Foxy Girl will evolve into something big one day?), and I understand her struggles with even peeking her foot in the hallway of the door.

Although this novel is about Eve’s struggles making it in the industry, she also falls in love. I am a sucker for love (not exactly romance) stories, and this is one that will make you smile too. Her friends Tabitha and Roseanne are just so colorful and true to life (they could easily relate to any of your friends now or in the past). The pages are filled with single girls dating drama, girl’s nights out, the search for an apartment in the city, friendship and family problems.

As I end this review, I want to share this paragraph from the book with you because after reading it, I think that you too will just want to run out to your local Barnes & Noble and snag yourself a copy of it.

“Sometimes I think I should have just had my nervous breakdown and gotten it over with. In high school, okay, maybe it would have been a little dramatic, but in college? I know I could have done it then. Lots of people did. I could have created a small but forgivable scandal. Nothing bad ever really happens to girls who take "time off." It's cool. I could have gone from gossip for a week to a point of reference for depressed women in future semesters. I kept waiting for the right time to give in to my depression, but I was too busy holding everyone's hair as they puked up cafeteria pesto and Natty Lite.”
